TS1107148 Is it possible to install different versions of Vault Server 2010 on the same machine

You would like to know if it is possible to install more than one version of Vault Server on the same machine.

It is only possible to install 1 version of Vault Server on one machine.

• Vault 2010 (Server)
• Vault Workgroup 2010 (Server)
• Vault Collaboration 2010 (Server)
• Vault Manufacturing 2010 (Server)...

..must all be installed on separate operating systems.

It is possible to install different versions of the Vault Client on the same machine. (See TS1106987)

TS1106987 Connecting to different versions of Vault 2010 (Server) from the same client

You operate in a mixed environment and need to connect to different versions of Vault Server from the same client machine.

To be able to do this you will need to install the servers corresponding client applications alongside each other.

Examples

For example if you have 4 servers

• Vault 2010 (Server)
• Vault Workgroup 2010 (Server)
• Vault Collaboration 2010 (Server)
• Vault Manufacturing 2010 (Server)

On the client you will need to install four client applications to be able to access them.

• Vault 2010 (Client)
• Vault Workgroup 2010 (Client)
• Vault Collaboration 2010 (Client)
• Vault Manufacturing 2010 (Client)

You will only be able to log in to...

• Vault 2010 (Server) from the Vault 2010 (Client)
• Vault Workgroup 2010 (Server) from the Vault Workgroup 2010 (Client)
• Vault Collaboration 2010 (Server) from the Vault Collaboration 2010 (Client)
• Vault Manufacturing 2010 (Server) using the Vault Manufacturing 2010 (Client)

NOTE!! It is not possible to install different versions of the server software side by side on the same machine.

Double Click or Edit a filetype from Vault Explorer

A Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) we get in DM Support is how to control what application is used to open the file when you right click Edit or Double Click a file in Vault Explorer.

The Vault Double click behaviour is customisable as a user option (Go, Tools>Options). The help explains the options.

When you Edit or Double-Click on a filetype in Vault Explorer it should pass the instruction on to the operating system. When the OS gets the command to Edit or Double click a file, it should use the application that is registered with the OS for that filetype. Note:- There may be differences in behaviour between Edit and Double-Click. Edit will open the application that can be used to change the file. A Double-Click on a file may only open the file in a viewer.

You can try this on a Jpg in Windows Explorer. (provided the defaults have not been chanegd). If you Right-click>Edit a jpg it will open in MS Paint. If you Right-click>open, it will open in a viewer.

Editing and Indexing 3rd Party File Formats in Vault

How do you identify your SQL Server version and edition

Every release of Vault has different System Requirements for SQL and before beginning to solve any problem, you need to first make sure that the system is supportable and it meets the requirements laid out when the product underwent development and testing.

Frequently, problems might be solved by installing an SQL service pack.So look at the Readme_Vault*\Productstream document that comes with your version ADMS.

Issue

You want to know if Microsoft® SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 is supported for use with Autodesk Data Management Server or Productstream™.

Solution

Microsoft® SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 is not supported for use with Autodesk Data Management Server 2009, Productstream™ (Server) 2009, or any other previous versions of these products.

Non Dedicated versus Dedicated Vault Server (ADMS)

One important consideration when you install ADMS is to think about the supportability of installing ADMS alongside other applications.

These other applications may include:-

    Active Directory (aka Domain Controller)

    Mail server software (Example: Exchange, Lotus Notes)

    Web applications (example: Sharepoint)

    Backup Software

Should a problem occur during the installation or use of ADMS, standard troubleshooting steps might typically involve uninstalling and reinstalling the components that ADMS uses (amongst others; SQL, IIS, .NET Framework, XML Parsers, WSE.). They may also involve, tweaking settings in the components or even repairing or reinstalling the operating system itself.

It's worth taking the time to think about the effects the above steps may have on business critical system such as Exchange or Sharepoint should you encounter a problem with any installed application like ADMS.

Sufficed to say, ADMS is supported for installing alongside other applications, but it is the servers administrator who has responsibility for ensuring they can get the 3rd Party applications back up and running afterwards with no dataloss.

Is VPN supported

Yes, Although performance will drop off. If performance is the reason for concern, then ask yourself "Can you reproduce when connecting from the local LAN?"

Is SBS 2008 supported?

No

SBS 2008 does not fall under the same product listings as Windows Server 2008. It is a separate product family and is neither tested nor supported for use with ADMS 2009 or ADMS 2010.

SBS 2003 continues to be supported for use with ADMS 2009.
