A new feature for the Vault 2010 product line is the ability to do an in place upgrade of the server software.
This will only work if the upgrade is being done from Vault/Productstream 2009.
During the process, custom values from the web.config file will be saved and the web.config file for 2010 will be modified with these settings.
The previous server version will be uninstalled, and the new version installed.
A backup is not done automatically and is recommended before starting this process
These are the recommended steps for migrating from Migrating from Vault / Productstream 2008
- Run an SQL Maintenance Plan
- Run a backup via ADMS Console
- Uninstall ADMS 2008
- Install Vault 2010
- Restore*
- Test
*In most cases, you do not need to uninstall SQL. The installer will find the instance and upgrade it if possible.
-
Run an SQL Maintenance Plan. This can reduce the time to restore later.
-
Run a backup via ADMS Console, the backup from the night before can be used, as long as the vault is not used between the time of the backup and the start of the migration.
-
Uninstall ADMS 2008, depending on your installation, other programs such as Design Review, Vault/Productstream client will need to be uninstalled at some point as they will no longer be used.
-
Install Vault 2010
-
Restore – its not really necessary to uninstall SQL. In most cases, the installer will find the existing instance and attempt to connect. You will need to know the SA password that was used for the original installation if it is not the default. This password is not recorded at anytime.
-
Test – After the installation, be sure to test thoroughly and make sure existing workflows work or are adapted to the new version, more on this later.
